There is a certain ritual to arriving at a campsite. The stabilizers go down, the slides go out, chairs come out, the fire gets started, and—regardless of the temperature—the first drink is poured. Our recent trip to Franz Jevne State Park was a chilly one, but that didn’t stop us from leaning into a Northwoods classic post campsite setup cocktail!
As soon as we were set up, it was time for a round of Border Town Bold Caesars. While the wind off the river was biting, the savory heat of this drink was exactly what we needed to kick off the weekend.
The Star Garnish: Spicy Pickled Beans

The real secret to a “Bold” Caesar is the garnish. My hubby gave the Spicy Pickled Beans a huge thumbs up at the picnic table this trip. They provide a crisp, vinegar-driven heat that stands up perfectly to the thick, savory base of the DIY Kickin’ Clamato.
Pro Tip: Don’t just use the beans as a garnish. Pour a splash of the spicy bean brine directly into your glass to really live up to the “Bold” name.
Why It Works for Camping
A Border Town Bold Caesar is perfect for easy assembly right out of the cooler or camper fridge, making it the perfect “arrival drink” when you’ve just finished backing into your spot and leveling the trailer. It’s a snack and a cocktail rolled into one—which is exactly what you need while the campfire is heating up.
Even when the weather doesn’t cooperate, the views of the Rainy River make it all worth it. Setting up camp and immediately sharing a round of drinks is our favorite way to transition into “river time.”
